Winter is coming! Oops, I mean, new achievements are coming! We reported earlier that Xbox One will introduce new types of achievements which aren’t just tied to games. We now have some more details on this.
Microsoft has filed patent for achievements linked to TV. The patent links “awards and achievements to particular items of video or advertising content.”
The application explicitly states that the company wants to encourage users to watch particular video content by offering awards and achievements for watching it. So users can unlock achievements for watching an event like the SuperBowl, or watching an entire series like Game of Thrones.
Don’t be too surprised yet. Microsoft has stated that increased viewership can result in increased advertising opportunities. Sounds about right for an ”all-in-one games and entertainment system.”
