While not directly connected with the Xbox 720 just yet, TheVerge is reporting that their “reliable source” familiar with Microsoft’s Xbox plans has revealed that Microsoft is developing a smartwatch device for over a year now.
It’s been alleged before that Microsoft wanted to release a “Joule” heart rate monitor for use with the Xbox 360, but for unknown reasons, Microsoft scrapped this idea and has since moved on to its smartwatch concept.
Supposedly, this smartwatch is said to be in the “prototype phase,” and the teams tinkering on it have worked on Xbox accessories and the Kinect sensor “focused” on the device. This smartwatch will feature removable bands attached to a 1.5-inch touchscreen display, and one prototype even includes the same magnetic power connector MS uses with its Surface tablets.
How is this related to the Xbox 720? We can’t say for sure just now, and as such, should be treated as a rumor still. However, don’t be that surprised when Microsoft has something up its sleeve (see what I did there?) come this May’s purported Xbox 720 reveal.
Who here is ready to wear an Xbox smartwatch?
