Well, this is interesting. Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes may be too “risky” to ever see the light of day. Designer Hideo Kojima explained in an group interview attended by Videogamer that the game’s mature and taboo themes may make it too controversial to release. Kojima also talked about the possibility of the game releasing to poor sales because of these complex themes.
“That’s precisely what I want to try to tackle with Ground Zeroes. Honestly I’m going to be targeting a lot of taboos, a lot of mature themes that really are quite risky,” Kojima said. “I’m not even sure if I’m going to be able to release the game, and even if I did release the game then maybe it wouldn’t sell because it’s too much. As a creator I want to take that risk.”
Kojima claimed that themes in videogames have not evolved over the past 25 years and that they have “a long way to go before they can mature.”
The Metal Gear Solid franchise has always been known to have an adult, complex storyline. It will be interesting to see what the subject matter in Ground Zeroes is that has Kojima so up in arms.
