Following Sony’s announcement of PS4 requiring a PlayStation Plus subscription to play games online, some fans were visibly upset. But Sony is kind enough to offer an explanation.
The company released a statement saying, “If we continue to invest into online infrastructures, that costs money. If we continue free service for online multiplayer, from a business standpoint, there’s pressure to recover costs. That’s when we decided ‘let’s ask the people who are most active in playing online to share some of the cost so we can invest more.’”
This sounds pretty reasonable. It is not feasible for Sony to allow another eight to ten years of totally free multiplayer gaming given that costs are on the rise.
But if it’s any consolation to fans, the PlayStation Plus subscription doesn’t cost much, and offers excellent value for money.
