In Bungie’s upcoming shooter Destiny, players will encounter several groups of other players in the world, blending the single-player into the multiplayer.
It’s hard not to see the similarities it has to Gearbox’s Borderlands series: both are multiplayer shooters with open worlds. But Destiny doesn’t stop at four concurrent players, Creative Lead Joe Staten told Edge.
“In Borderlands you can run around with enemies and run into a few enemies to kill,” Staten said, “in Destiny you will run around with your friends, run into other small groups of friends who are also there killing monsters, you see other people off on the horizon, hear gunfire over a hill and you see space magic flying behind some trees. There are other people out there.”
The game will feature public events, similar to MMO’s public quests, that will bring in players over the internet to tackle the same objectives.
Destiny is in development for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. The game is scheduled to release in 2014.
