Update: Blizzard has taken down both the web and mobile auction houses for “emergency maintenance in all regions,” according to the Blizzard Support page. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.” There’s no estimated time for when they will be restored.
Several World of Warcraft players have lost thousands of gold, the game’s in-game currency, to an alleged security breach in the Mobile Armory app.
Players are reporting thousands of their gold was spent on low quality items, that were then sold, illegally, to another player’s account.
WoW Insider is reporting that Blizzard Entertainment has disabled the auction houses on some servers, and has cut off access to it from the Mobile Armory app.
Blizzard has not made a public statement at the time of this writing.
“Woke up this morning, same [thing] happened to me,” World of Warcraft forum user Suhuachi wrote, “No one knows my [password] or [has] access to my phone. [Didn’t] share anything, got all my gold swiped but gear left alone.”
Some users report Blizzard has told affected users to enable SMS Protect, a security service that requires users to enter a code sent to their cell phone upon login, to prevent future issues.
The mobile armory app lets users bid, buy, and sell items through the game’s auction house on their iOS and Android devices.
I’ve contacted Blizzard and will update the post should it respond.
