As everyone should know by now, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is set to retire in the next 10 months and so Microsoft are looking for a replacement in the mean time. At the minute they have Ford CEO Alan Mulally and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop on the table.
Elop did previously work at Microsoft as the head of their business division, but it is believed that he has big plans in place if he does return to the company. According to Bloomberg Elop is considering shutting down or selling some of Microsoft’s businesses, such as the Xbox One business.
This would be a pretty bold move for Elop, as the Xbox business is a very major part of Microsoft and has been for the last decade or so. This is all of course speculation but if he was to get rid of the Xbox One business and sell it on, who would pick it up as it is? Micrososft aren’t all that far away from launch their next-gen console and they’ve got every outlined for the next generation, someone taking over now wouldn’t make sense.
