“Star Wars: First Assault” set to be the predecessor to Battlefront 3, release still uncertain

Late last year, there was a listing for a Star Wars game called Star Wars: First Assault which was planned for release on Xbox LIVE.
Now, Kotaku can reveal via its sources that SW: First Assault is set to be a downloadable multiplayer shooter, and was originally scheduled to ship this spring. Allegedly, First Assault was supposed to support 16 players, with the teams broken down to eight-person teams of rebels against Stormtroopers where they’ll battle it out at iconic Star Wars settings like Tatooine and Bespin.
According to a person familiar with the situation, First Assault is “step zero” to the highly-anticipated Star Wars: Battlefront 3. LucasArts was purportedly gauging sales of First Assault to see if it’s the right time to release Battlefront 3.
Interestingly enough, Star Wars: First Assault might not even see the light of day. One major reason for this is that when Disney bought out LucasArts, LucasFilm froze all hiring and game announcements. This has put the kibosh on First Assault’s beta which was originally planned to be announced last September in line with its originally targeted spring release.
So this means that since September of last year, employees at LucasArts have been toiling away on the game with no knowledge if it will even come out at all. The same source mentioned above, also mentions that LucasArts is “bleeding talent” as employees wait and see to see what Disney and LucasFilm have in mind for First Assault, as well as the other Star Wars-related games.
For reference, Star Wars 1313, which was shown off impressively at last year’s E3, is also in the same boat. Until now, we’re still unsure what the status of the game is.
Battlefront fans who want to read more details, head on over to Kotaku’s report.
Should LucasArts and Disney just release First Assault or should they trash it and go straight to Battlefront 3? If it was up to you, what would you do?
