As 2013 nears to its close, we’re left wondering what we can expect from the recently launched PS4 and Xbox One systems. Launch titles like Killzone: Shadow Fall, Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome and the rest that we’ve been enjoying over the past few weeks are a perfect way to bring us into this new generation, but they can only hold our attention for so long.

With 2014 closing in fast, gamers are left wondering what goodies we can look forward to on our shiny consoles. Well, the future is bright my friends. I’ve put together a generous list of games. Not all games coming next year are included here, as that would entail making a list of hundreds, but I feel safe in saying this is a pretty cumulative list indeed.

Title: Planetside 2 | Developer: Sony Online Entertainment | Release date: Early 2014 | Genre: MMO FPS

PlanetSide 2 is a re-imagining of PlanetSide, featuring the same world, factions and taking place at roughly the same time period. As in the previous game, it features territory control in an open-world, large battles featuring up to 2000 players per continent on foot or in land/air vehicles. The territory system differs greatly from that of the original, being more free-form and based on a hexagonal territory control system. SOE has been taking into account balance issues from the first game. As stated by creative director Matthew Higby, they reward combatants on lower population empires through mechanics such as proportionally increased advancement rates and resources to aid the balance of overall empire saturation on each server as much as possible without force-restricting players from being able to play with their friends.

It is a faster paced game than the original PlanetSide and holds the ability to feature potentially thousands of players. It also features familiar first person shooter elements such as sprinting, iron sights, and regenerating shields. An important aspect is that player skill and teamwork are major determiners when it comes to being able to kill other players and overcome opposing teams. Unlockable skills are available and are stated to only make between a 15-20% difference between any player[citation needed]. The game also features a day and night cycle, meaning that battles happen in different times of day, affecting the general methods for warfare.

Developed by Ubisoft Montpellier on the UbiArt Framework (the same studio and engine that gave us Rayman Legends and Rayman Origins), Valiant Hearts tells the tale of four strangers coming together on the battlefield to help a young German soldier find love in a story about survival, sacrifice and friendship.

Solve puzzles and sneak through enemy lines while doing your best to stay alive. Each of the five playable characters (including the lovelorn German soldier) work alongside the same faithful canine companion at different times, all trying to survive in the trenches while doing their best to hold onto their humanity in the face of loss and tragedy. Though it’s set during a dark time in history, there are lighthearted (and even comical) moments spread throughout the game.

Title: Watch Dogs | Developer: Ubisoft Montreal | Release date: Spring 2014 | Genre: Puzzle Adventure

Set in Chicago, where a central network of computers connects everyone and everything, Watch_Dogs explores the impact of technology within our society. Using the city as your weapon, you will embark on a personal mission to inflict your own brand of justice. Chicago’s overarching network is known as the Central Operating System (ctOS), and it controls almost all of the city’s technology and information – including key data on all of the city’s residents.

You play as Aiden Pearce, a brilliant hacker and former thug, whose criminal past led to a violent family tragedy. While seeking justice for those events, you’ll monitor and hack those around you by manipulating the ctOS from the palm of your hand. You’ll access omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control traffic lights and public transportation to stop the enemy… and more.

Title: The Witcher 3 | Developer: CD Projekt Red | Release date: TBA 2014 | Genre: Open World Action RPG

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the recently announced third and final installment in the series of games by CD Projekt RED featuring witcher Geralt of Rivia. The game is scheduled to be released sometime in 2014 and will be set in an open world, unlike the previous games. The game will also be built using the new REDengine3. The game’s atmosphere is set in the aftermath of the events of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The plot combines several storyline elements – with the two main ones being Nilfgaard’s invasion into the Northern Kingdoms and Geralt’s own quest to eliminate the Wild Hunt.

The game will introduce “a living open world larger than any other in modern RPG history.” The setting is more than “30 times larger” than previous Witcher games, requiring players to catch a sailboat for some locations and ride horseback to others. However, fast travelling for the area of known locations is also possible. The Witcher 3 has been described as “20% bigger than Skyrim,” and CD Projekt RED anticipates approximately 100 hours for the completion of the main story and open-world quests.

It’s a good time to be a gamer, regardless of who you pledge your allegiance to.

Only 6 games I’d buy, OUTLAST, Dying Light, Evil Within, UFC 14, Witcher 3 & Thief.. But with nothing good out currently on the “next-gen” consoles I have no reason to buy one, I’m a Gamer & I’ll wait for the games to drop and not have to BETA test the “next-gen” consoles for them, you casuals can have fun with that.

keep playing games with subpar resolutions and mediocre textures while we play the same games at full 1080P, higher texture count higher polygon count and with better online features.

Dfgg sounds a little jealous he or she doesn’t have a current gen console, stuck on last gen. I love my PS4 so much more than my 360 or PS3 I will not buy another game on them if given a choice. BETA console testers? Lol! Real gamers get the latest and greatest buddy, we don’t wait around to play the newest stuff available. You are the definition of casual.

Shadow of The Beast looks intriguing

Besides Titanfall there are no interesting exclusives for the XB1. I wish MS would rather focus more on making PC exclusives like back in the day… I still remember Age of Mythology… I don’t really see any good out of the rivalry between MS and Sony. Now saying that in the cynical way.
