Over at Eurogamer Expo, Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison revealed that Microsoft is in it for the long haul when it comes to the Xbox One, which will initially go on sale later this fall.
Harrison revealed that the Xbox One is “more than a 10-year journey” for Microsoft, saying that through a plethora of new features, which include the cloud, Microsoft is aiming to support the Xbox One longer than any of the company’s previous consoles. As for what will allow the Xbox One’s long lifespan, Harrison said that, by focusing on the social and community aspects, as well as the power of the cloud, the Xbox One will allow for a longer lifespan that what is considered to be normal for a console.
The P.E. Perspective: The shift made from simply putting powerful hardware to making sure there are enough services to increase the lifespan of a console. Microsoft is not only placing the emphasis on the Xbox One’s hardware, but also what it offers in terms of services. Hardware can only get you so far, but so long as there are services tied to the console that are strong-enough supports, the console will do just fine.
