“Most game designers really just suck” – Richard Garriott
Authored by Patrick Day-Childs
Richard is a little big headed, however if anyone has earned it he has. Richard programmed his first game on a piece of paper with holes in it; a lot like a pianola.
Richard used a few quotes that will probably annoy game developers
“But other than a few exceptions, like Chris Roberts, I’ve met virtually no one in our industry who I think is close to as good a game designer as I am. I’m not saying that because I think I’m so brilliant. What I’m saying is, I think most game designers really just suck, and I think there’s a reason why.”
Richard admits that he’s no artist, or composer and says that the ones they hire are “infinitely better”
“Every artist we’ve ever hired ever is at art than I ever was. I was never a good artist, or audio engineer, or composer.”
Richard believes that people often become designers because they’re not very good at art etc but still want to work in games, and basically become a designer because they can’t do anything else within the industry.
“But if you’re not a good artist and not a good programmer, but you still like games, you become a designer, if you follow me. You get into Q&A and often design.”
So what do you think? A fair thing to say, or just insulting?
