Here is the latest news on the upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins game. A while back, we reported that after the first batch of screens were leaked we thought Black Mask would be the main antagonist of the newest Batman adventure. Well, today Game Informer has confirmed that Black Mask will indeed serve as the Bats’ primary nemesis. While Black Mask might not be as popular as the likes of The Joker or The Penguin, he will certainly appeal to hardcore Batman fans.
The post goes on to give some really good details and outline Black Mask’s history in the Batman series, which actually encompasses two different characters. The original, Roman Sionis who arrived on the scene in 1985, will be featured in Origins. While Black Mask might not seem like the best choice in terms of mass market appeal, developer Warner Bros. Games Montreal told Game Informer that there is an opportunity to mold the mayhem when working with a clean slate.
In his interview with Game Informer, creative director Eric stated:
“Black Mask is new money. He’s rich. He’s very, very powerful. He’s made it. He’s known for being brutal and sadistic. And particularly at this point in the Arkham franchise he has enormous resources. He is the number one gang leader in Gotham. And has easily the most power in the city. It’s not something people bring a lot of baggage to when you see the Black Mask, so we have to do the work to make him scary.”
WBG Montreal also gave some insight while teasing the broader story arc of the game in the interview:
“The sadistic nature of Black Mask is a fun thing for us to play with. The lengths to which he’s willing to go to get what he wants. It’s basically Batman’s worst nightmare. We have eight of the best assassins in the world who’ve come together to Gotham City for one night, Christmas Eve of all nights, to kill the Bat.”
