Austin Wintory soundtrack for Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded is jazz fueled fun
Authored by Rob Newberry
We’ve been anticipating the release of the Leisure Suit Larry reboot since it first appeared on Kickstarter just over a year ago. Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded by Replay Games is getting closer and closer to coming (see what I did there?) to a platform near you, and we’ve been teased with some early video, concept art and some behind the scenes work with Al Lowe and the developers over the last few months. This morning we were pleased to see that the soundtrack composer, Austin Wintory (Journey, Monaco) has posted an update on the Kickstarter updates page announcing the official soundtrack is now available on Bandcamp…and it’s a jazz fueled trip you’ll want to get your earbuds on.
Wintory is no stranger to video game soundtracks, having won several awards (and a Grammy nomination) for his work on Journey, and summed up his experience working on LSL: Reloaded saying:
It goes without saying that I *love* Al’s original Larry theme, and so I clung to it rather fiercely throughout the score. Even though this is a fundamentally new Larry, in terms of the music, hopefully it feels like one big tip of the hat.
I became sort of obsessed with trying to make Larry feel almost like this idealistic romantic guy, and not some sleazeball, so hopefully you’ll feel a genuine, earnest romance in the music too (which of course ends up being rather hilarious when you pair that with some of the dialogue these guys wrote).
Soundtrack highlights include “Larry Reloaded” (of course) and we could practically smell the smoke and stale beer wafting through the bluesy harmonica track laid down by Ross Garren on “Juke 1: Lefty’s”. Al Lowe’s original tune carries through in various incarnations on tracks like “Below the Stars, Above the Lights” and “He’s Alive”. Capping it off is an original track by Wintory and Sierra alumni Josh Mandel entitled “Tiers of Joy” sung by Melora Hardin.
For the project, Wintory worked with the Late Night Jazz Orchestra, and enlisted a few other musicians to breathe a new life into our leisure-suited protagonist’s exploits.
Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded‘s official soundtrack will be available to all Kickstarter backers at the $25 tier and above, and can be purchased now through Wintory’s bandcamp page for $6 or more. It’s fully worth the money, and is the kind of playlist you can throw on at a casual evening with friends who’ve never played or heard of the original, while you smile knowingly every time you catch that familiar tune come through over the conversation.
Make sure to check out the YouTube clip below of Wintory and the Late Night Jazz Orchestra performing the title track.
Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded is set for a June 2013 release for Microsoft Windows via Steam, Mac OS X, iOS, Android, and Linux.
